HOT & HEALTHY POTATO IDEAS
Denver, Colorado (August, 2014) –– The United States Potato Board celebrated the goodness of potatoes with an exciting recipe challenge—the Hot Potato, Healthy Potato Recipe Contest. Today, the U.S. Potato Board is pleased to announce the winners of the contest. Chef Daniel Ramos, Executive Sous Chef at the Quail Ridge Country Club, takes home the first place prize with his Potato & Shrimp Stir-Fry recipe. Chef Amy Freeze has been named first runner-up with her Summer Mandarin Potato Salad recipe, and Chef Brian Karam is second runner-up with his Moroccan Potato & Sun Dried Tomato Tagine.
All entries were judged based on taste, creativity, presentation and description, and Chef Ramos’ delectable and nutritious Potato & Shrimp Stir-Fry lived up to the challenge. Chef Ramos has won an all-expense paid trip to the Menu Innovations with Potatoes seminar at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley, California, in October. At the event, he will have the opportunity to work side by side with elite domestic and international chefs from leading foodservice operations and learn more about fresh, frozen and dehydrated potatoes.
Potatoes are the best-selling side dish in foodservice because of their universal appeal—flavor, familiarity and craveability. At just 110 calories, a 5.3 oz potato with skin is fat-free, cholesterol-free, gluten-free and nutrient-dense. The Hot Potato, Healthy Potato recipe contest highlighted just how nutritious and versatile potatoes can be, whether they’re center of plate or served as the starring side dish.
