For Christmas, a friend brings a plate of cookies over to our house. My 3 year old son asks me, “Can I have a cookie, Mom?” I tell him, “When your sandwich is gone.” While I’m talking with the friend, my son slides the sandwich into his older sister’s hand; she holds it absentmindedly while she continues to talk with us. My son approaches me again: “Can I have a cookie now?” I tell him, “Where is your sandwich? You couldn’t have eaten it that fast.” He replies, “Hannah took it.” My daughter looks in her hand, speechless.
