Chemical and physical analyses
Soil pH was determined in 0.01 M CaCl2 at a soil:solution ratio of 1:2.5. Soil organic C was measured by dry combustion at 550 °C using a C elemental analyzer (LECO, St. Joseph, MI). Soil texture was determined by the hydrometer method. Field capacity of the soil was determined by allowing a saturated soil core to equilibrate to a constant moisture on a pressure plate at −30 kPa, after which the core was weighed and then oven dried at 110 °C, and re-weighed.
