Japan is one of the major markets for Ethiopian coffee. Japan imports coffee from 34 countries, the major being (in their order) Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia,Vietnam, Ethiopia, and India. These countries represent more than 75% of the total coffee import volume in Japan (ICO, 2010). Moreover, they compete for the Japanese coffee market. During 2002 to 2009, Brazil dominates the market both in terms of volume and value, followed by Colombia and Indonesia while Ethiopia is fifth in terms of volume (Table 8). Among the competitors in Japanese market, Colombia,Ethiopia and some other countries with smaller shares produce Arabica coffee only which is known for its quality while Brazil produces both Arabica (more than 85%) and Robusta (ICO statistical data base, 2010).
