Costume of Louis XIV
Royal courts were centres of luxury and extravagance and a rising class of wealthy merchants vied to clothe the rich people in splendour. It is recorded that Louis XIV wore one bejewelled costume with had diamond buttons worth 2 million francs. His garments were all velvet, or silk, or fur, intricately embroidered and encrusted with jewels. He wore a curled wig of huge proportions. His garters and shoes were all ornamented with diamonds and lace and he carried a gold sceptre with him always.
