The most effective tactics for influencing target commitment to carry out a requestor support a proposal (sometimes called “core tactics”) are rational persuasion, consultation,collaboration, and inspirational appeals. How a tactic is actually used is one determinantof its effectiveness. For example, a strong form of rational persuasion (e.g.,a detailed proposal, elaborate documentation) is much more effective than a weakform of rational persuasion (e.g., a brief explanation, an assertion without supportingevidence). Examples of ways to use the core tactics are provided in Table 6-11. The guidelines are suggestions rather than prescriptions, because it is essential to evaluate the situation and determine the appropriate way to use each tactic.
