Data protection is also an issue with telemedicine technology – voice over
3G and 4G cellphone networks is encoded and cannot be “listened in on”,
however current ambulance (and some police and fire) radios do not
encode the voice conversation and can be 'eavesdropped” on by scanner
radios9. Any form of communication of voice, data, video, or any other data
that could lead to an issue with the breaking of patient confidentiality must
meet current and future requirements for the same10. Sneiderman and
Ackerman11 expand into more detail the issues that will arise from the
predicted growth of the use of Telemedicine including :
Unauthorised Access to Data
Maintaining Data Integrity and Authenticity (Primarily the unauthorised
changing of patient data)
Unauthorised Disclosure of Patient Information
The ability to identify individual patients by “Data Mining”12
