4.0 CONCLUSION
With this literature review we were able to compile information on sea star
control methods used around the world. For the Gulf of St Lawrence, two major
species are of concern for shellfish culture, Asterias vulgaris and Leptasterias
polaris. Predation can compromise the success of enhancement efforts and
aquaculture endeavors, therefore the removal of sea stars should be considered
in shellfish aquaculture operations. Yet, the critical sea star density at which the
cost of removal is justified could not be found in the literature. Theoretically,
densities greater than 1/m2 have an impact on seeded scallop survival. Sea star
densities as high as 2.5/m2 have been observed on the scallop enhancement
Pecten sites in the Baie des Chaleurs.
