Decimals are an integral part of learning mathematics and have a place in the world
outside the classroom. They assist in describing part of a whole and allow us to express
solutions exactly and approximately. The prior learning that students experience impacts
how new knowledge is processed by them. Concept Cartoons have been created to assist in
eliciting the student’s prior knowledge of decimals. With the additional information that
could be gained regarding the students learning a more effective program may be adopted.
