Based on the literature on actual and perceived
safety, several key principles for the planning and
design of safer public places that are relevant to greenway
planning may be summarized. These principles
are rooted in the context of prospect and refuge theory,
which provides a theoretical basis in human ecology,
and they may be categorized as follows:( 1) visibility
of others; (2) visibility by others; (3) choice and control;
(4) environmental awareness and legibility; (5)
solitude without isolation.
