While Toyota is well on its way to achieving its goal of being the world’s largest car manufacturer - it’s currently second, trailing only General Motors it has struggled in the Chinese market, the faster growing auto market in the world. In 2005, it sold a more 183,000 car there, ranking ninth in the market, far behind Volkswagen, General Motor, Hyundai, and Honda. And its performance to date falls well short of its ambitions: Toyota’ s goal is to sell one million car a year in China by 2010. Part of Toyota‘s problem is that it was a late entrant. It delayed producing car in China until 2002, when it entered into a joint venture with a local company , the First Auto Works Group (FAW).The first car manufactured by Toyota-FAW, the Vios, failed to attract much of a market ,for, despite its unremarkable design, it was three times as expensive as most cars sold in China.
