The term gluteal amnesia describes the status of the backsides of today’s weak, poorly developed,
and sedentary people whose glutes are so atrophied and uncoordinated that they fail to work
properly during functional movement. This lack of functional coordination occurs for myriad
reasons.
Excessive sitting decreases flexibility in the hip extensors, inhibits gluteal activation, and
compresses gluteal tissue, thereby shutting off its blood supply, which interferes with nutrient
delivery and neural functioning. Finally, the law of use vs. disuse applies heavily to the glutes;
people who use the muscles of their buttocks keep them, but folks who fail to use them will watch
their glutes wither away over time.
