Business in India tends to be organized around family business groups. Business groups are a concept that will be discussed in greater detail later in the book, however, it is sufficient to say now that these are highly diversified entities in which a given family controls the business. As a result, it typically is helpful to have introductions to various firms with which you wish to do business. There are communities from different parts of India, with their own distinct dialects, that have a disproportionate impact on business in India. The most important communities include Marwari, Gujarati and Chettiar. People from these communities have controlling interests in some of the largest Indian business houses and commonly prefer to do business with individuals also originally from these regions.
