Second food regime (1945 - 1980) - This is sometimes referred to as the 'productivist' phase in agriculture. Grain-fed livestock systems and the production of fats/durable foods played a central role, the UK dairy system being an example. The regime saw the rise of globalized capitalist agriculture in the periphery, as well as large-scale subsidy systems in the core (especially the EU and USA). This phase corresponds broadly to the modernization phase of the second wave of globalization and created a NIDL in agriculture. The oil crises and the inability of nation-states to maintain subsidies, together with oversupply and safety concerns, are leading to the eclipsing of this regulatory regime.
