There are important factors associated with preslaughter and slaughter that are directly related to animals being calm and moving very little at the time of slaughter. Equipment designed for physical restraint such as adjustable stun boxes, head gates and restraint conveyors all play a role in facilitating slaughter. Equally important are suitably designed and operated transport and slaughter facilities, an understanding of species specific animal behavior and the application of suitable animal handling procedures, all which result in calm nonstressed animals being presented for slaughter. Such animals are far more likely to be humanely slaughtered without posing a hazard to themselves and workers than those which are stressed and handled improperly. There are also several postslaughter industry practices associated with bleeding out, skinning and meat quality where the animal's carcass is immobilized.
