The stronger claims for political discourse hidden in the spread of English were made public in 1908 by Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi, a world-renowned leader of the nonviolent resistance movement against British colonial rule in India. Gandhi (as cited in Bragg, 2004), working as a lawyer at that time, wrote a pamphlet to criticize not the law, the military or commercial control, but the English language.
