Using a knife to obtain and then spread a food item is different than using a fork or spoon in that the action is more of a lateral movement. Based on muscular problems, it is possible that a person can perform this even when spoon and fork use have been unsuccessful. Toast has been chosen as the item to be spread upon because it is more rigid than untoasted bread. Be certain to check for any food allergies before offering any of the sample items. If allergies exist for an item, substitute foods with similar consistencies as reasonable. The reinforcement for success will be the actual consumption of the item prepared, along with verbal praise.
