Extraoral Characteristics: Not applicable
Perioral and Intraoral Characteristics: The growths are usually nodular and exophytic. They may be pedunculated They have a smooth surface texture and firm consistency and are about the same color or slightly lighter in color than the surrounding tissues. The surface of the lesion may be ulcerated if it is continually traumatized. Although the lesions can be found on any mucosal surface, they a usually found in areas of the oral cavity that are frequentl traumatized, such as the tongue, buccal mucosa, and lips(Fig. 17.2). Figure 17.3 shows a fibroma in the palatal region. Denture-induced fibrous hyperplasia is characterized by exuberant growth of tissue under and around a denture, often involving the tissues in the vestibule. The tissue normally takes on a folded appearance, with the flange of the denture fitting between the folds(Fig. 17.4)
