A man fell to his death from inside the Silom Complex on Thursday evening, landing beside an escalator as horrified shoppers looked on.
The man was reported to have fallen from the fifth floor and hit a goods kiosk on the ground floor, killing him instantly.
The incident took place at about 4.30pm when a busy clearance sales event of a clothing brand was being held on the ground floor, causing shock to shoppers.
The dead man was later identified as Sawat Yatha, a 55-year-old war veteran and a Bangkok native, said Pol Capt Pitinan Kaewduangpian, a duty officer at Thung Maha Mek police station.
Winesses told police Sawat, who was wearing a green T-shirt with a cartoon character and military-style camouflage pants, took off his shoes at a sofa near the glass railing on the fifth floor. He then walked to the railing and jumped over it. His body was found lying face down on a clothing rail near the escalator on the ground floor.
Pol Capt Pitinan said police are questioning Sawat’s relatives to establish a motive for him jumping to his death just a day after the annual Veterans' Day.
