Italy summary- A long problem of declining birth rates and a rapidly ageing population
Present- Very low birth rate (1.33). The replacement rate is 2.1!
Future- Falling population. From 57 million in 1998 to an estimated 42 million in 2050.
Factors- Lack of jobs. In the year 2000, only 60% of men had jobs. Only 30% of men and women of working age have jobs. High child fees such as nursery fees and high house prices are also contributing factors. These are social factors.
Policy- Payments of 1,000 Euros made to couples who have a second child. Employees trying to increase the amount of jobs, with support from the government which is a political factor.
Impacts / future- Estimated population down 16 million from 1998 to 2050. Not enough young people of working age. Italy needs to increase its BR or increase immigration!
