Thanjavur economy is dependent largely on the indigenous industries such as hand loom, textile, chemical, paper and rubber. The small scale industries of Thanjavur were established around the year 1979. From then on, the city has been experiencing a gradual economic growth. Economy of Thanjavur has seen an immense growth in the recent years due to the flourishing of the silk and cotton industries. These industries have provided employment to more than 60,000 workers. The state government is funding these industries in order to expand their infrastructure and recruit more workers.
