Food is a key resource, and the poor in a number of developing countries continue to suffer shortages and access problems. Agricultural improvements since the 1960s have boosted crop yields, but there has been less improvement of sustainability and access or food reserves. In some regions where agriculture has been successfully improved over the last few decades there are now signs that fertilisers, pesticides and other crucial inputs are causing serious environmental problems. So there will have to be a ‘Doubly Green Revolution’, leading to sustainably raised yields with less environmental damage.
