The bulk of the Central African Republic’s water resources is made up of surface water which forms a dense river system in both the Congo Basin in the south and the Chari Basin in the north, and also groundwater estimated at more than 12 billion cubic metres which is renewable. Despite the country’s vast water potential, the rate of access to drinking water in the CAR is still very low at around 32%; this level was achieved with assistance from development partners through the construction of boreholes and protected wells.
