Climate is a key driver of the distribution of vegetation includ-ing, grasslands and woodlands (Bailey 2014). Along a gradientof precipitation, while maintaining temperature constant, theproportion of trees increases from grasslands, which have notrees, to savannas, which have a mixture of trees and grasses,to a closed-canopy forest (Bailey 2014). However, the effectof precipitation on the distribution of forest, savannas and tree-less is not always linear. Studies of continental patterns haveshown discontinuities in the distribution of woody-plant abun-dance with precipitation (Hirota et al. 2011).
