Participants were assigned in sequential order to one of two test conditions. In one of the conditions, participants were
asked to describe one personal memory of a specific event that they shared with a parent and one vicarious memory of a specific event from a parent’s life that was shared with the participant. In the other test condition, participants were asked to
describe one personal memory of a specific event that they shared with a friend and one vicarious memory of a specific event
from a friend’s life that was shared with the participant. In both conditions, the order in which participants provided the two
memories was counterbalanced. Participants gave ratings and answered questions about the qualities of the first memory
before moving on to the second memory. The vicarious memory prompt asked participants to identify a specific event
