In Mahayana Buddhism in China, in general, the bodhisattva affects human destiny with his vow to save all sentient beings.
Humans are thus obliged to show faith in the Buddhist deities, such as the bodhisattvas and celestial Buddhas, to change their destiny of being reborn in samsara to a better condition (pure land).
In the Lotus Sutra, Avalokitesvara is said to be able to take any form, male or female, and any age, in order to save people from samsara.
In that sutra Avalokitesvara takes on 33 different forms, including seven that are female. As scholars tell us, then, it does not matter whether the bodhisattva is shown as male or female, because he can take on any guise to save sentient beings.
