The TOEFL® test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States. Wherever you want to study, the TOEFL test can help you get there.
You can take the TOEFL test at your choice of conveniently located, ETS-approved test sites around the world. You also save time and money since the entire test is given in one day, rather than coming back a second day like some other tests.
The TOEFL test helps prove you have the English skills you will actually use in an academic classroom. Integrated Writing
Writing Based on Reading and Listening
Here you will read a passage about an academic topic. Then you will listen to a lecture about the same topic. You are permitted to take notes while you read and listen. You will be asked a question that relates to both the text and the listening. Your response should be 150-225 words. Hint: Look for three many points that are related. Your score will depend on the quality of your writing as well as how well you answer the question. After you have heard the lecture you will have twenty minutes to plan and write your response.
Independent Writing
Writing Based on Knowledge and Experience
This section of the test asks you questions about common experiences. You will be asked to give your opinion and provide reasons and examples. You will not be required to have any previous knowledge on a topic. You will have 30 minutes to prepare an essay in response to the question provided.

The Quality of the Test
• Practicality
In order to determine practicality of TOEFL iBT writing, several types of sources are needed to be identified. Due to limited number of references available for examining test design and operation stages, this section focuses on evaluating its practicality in administration stage. In terms of human resources, each test center has to look for proctors. ETS (2007b) makes sure that “training test center staff is conducted on how to handle a test administration session”. For scoring, the test tasks are rated by two qualified raters and a third rater evaluates the tasks if necessary, to ensure score reliability
• Reliability
The TOEFL iBT Writing is a high-stakes exam, administered all over the world so its reliability is important criteria to evaluate the quality of the exam. When “different forms of the test are administered to test takers at different times and in different location” (ETS, 2008), we need to ensure the condition the test is administered, raters and test tasks are consistent.
• Validity
Construct validity is important quality in evaluating usefulness because in order to use the test score for making an important decision, it is necessary to have adequate evidences of score interpretation for the language ability we want to measure.

The Quality of the Test
• Practicality
In order to determine practicality of TOEFL iBT writing, several types of sources are needed to be identified. Due to limited number of references available for examining test design and operation stages, this section focuses on evaluating its practicality in administration stage. In terms of human resources, each test center has to look for proctors. ETS (2007b) makes sure that “training test center staff is conducted on how to handle a test administration session”. For scoring, the test tasks are rated by two qualified raters and a third rater evaluates the tasks if necessary, to ensure score reliability
