Secondary data sources included classroom observations in order to
detect more the nuanced responses and reactions of the participants as
related to communication issues that occurred during actual SSI
instruction. All small group class discussions (classes 3–7 in Appendix A)
were video-taped and audio-recorded and partially transcribed if they were
proved to be a fruitful resource of understanding the processes underlying
how students communicate in terms of presenting their positions, using
evidence to support their stances, utilizing multiple perspectives on issues,
and developing consensus.
