Target herbage allocations were achieved by making daily adjustments to the sizes of the areas grazed by each treatment group, based on pregrazing sward heights. Sward heights were measured daily (pre- and postgrazing) throughout the experimental period using a rising plate meter (Jenquip folding plate pasture meter; Jenquip, Feilding, New Zealand), with 20 swardheight measurements being taken at random in a “W” formation across the area designated for grazing within each treatment. The mean aboveground pre- and postgrazing herbage masses for each of the grazing areas were then estimated using the following linear equation
