In the first stage, precontemplation, individuals
either deny they need to change their behavior, are unaware of the negative consequences of their
behavior, believe the consequences are insignificant,
or have given up the thought of changing because
they are demoralized. These individuals are often
unaware of the importance of healthy behaviors,
such as the importance of physical activity in the
secondary prevention of CHD. They often become
defensive and resistant if pressured to take action in
the next 6 months.
