Use of Pesticides among Thai Farmers
As agriculture students, we are interested in the controversial issue of pesticides: are they harmful or helpful? Pesticides are those substances which are used to control, destroy, repel or attract pests in order to minimize their detrimental effects. Crop production technology using pesticides allows producers to increase crop yields and efficiency of food production processes. Despite their advantages, there are some criticisms against the use of Pesticides.
There are many advantages of using pesticides. According to research, pesticides are an economical way of controlling pests like weeds, insect, fungi, or rodents. They require low labour input and allow large areas to be treated quickly and effectively. It has been estimated that there is a four-fold return on every dollar a farmer spends on pesticides (Anon, 1990). A suitable farm chemical is available for most pest problems. It can remove pest problems and is better timeliness of pest control. Using pesticides means that there is a plentiful supply of fruits and vegetables, as well as and a variety of high quality products, at reasonable prices. Modern society demands nutritious food, free from damage caused by pests, and decorative flowers which look untouched. This would be very difficult without pesticides. Pesticides are often used to stop the spread of pests on imports and exports, and protect against house and furniture destruction as well. Currently, weeds are controlled by herbicides, but without them, land will be damage, reducing land degradation (Kent John, Lecturer in Agricultural Protection, school of Agriculture, Charles Sturt University).
Despite their many advantages, there are disadvantage of pesticides. To start with, chemical application spread the reduction in these other organisms which can result in changes in the biodiversity of an area and affect natural biological balances. Pesticides can affect other areas during application and can cause severe problems in different crops, livestock, waterways and the general environment and cause environmental pollution. University of Florida said natural resources can be degraded when pesticide residues in storm water runoff enter streams or leach into groundwater can harm or kill nontarget plants, fish, or other wildlife, are the most affected. There is the possibility of pesticides in human food, by direct application to the food, or by biomagnifications along the food chain. Not all levels are undesirable but unnecessary and dangerous levels must be avoided through good agricultural practice. And chemical can reach underground aquifers if there is persistent product use in agricultural areas. Pesticide operators run the risk of poisoning through excessive exposure, if safe handling procedures are not followed and protective clothing is not worn. Poisoning risk depends on dose, toxicity, duration of exposure, and sensitivity. As pesticides used now have been though rigorous testing, most health problems stem from misuse, abuse or overuse.
In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages of using pesticides. Pesticides can kill various insects, pest, and weeds, but when it rains, it washes off and flows into rivers killing fish and other aquatic animals, and it poses risks to the environment and our health. Our opinion is that it would be better if we used biotechnology products, such as use of resistance varieties, insect resistance, herbicide tolerance, pathogen resistance or a combination of the three. It helps control weeds, harmful insects and numerous plant diseases that affect cash crops.

Good morning everyone. We are glad to present our research to you today. My name is Supaporn Wanuan. My three other group members are Suparat Noimor, Saowalak Phimkhan and Thananiti Thichan. I am studying for a Bachelor’s degree at the Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University. The topic of our presentation is Use of Pesticides among Thai Farmers. Our two questions are “What are the advantages of using pesticides in farming?” And “What are the disadvantages of using pesticides in farming?” We chose this topic because as agriculture students, we are interested in the controversial issue of pesticides: are they harmful or helpful? Pesticides are those substances which are used to control, destroy, repel or attract pests in order to minimize their detrimental effects. Crop production technology using pesticides allows producers to increase crop yields and efficiency of food production processes. Despite their advantages, there are some criticisms against the use of Pesticides. We will spend about 10 minutes on this presentation. If you have any question, please keep them at the end of our talk. OK, let’s begin.
To answer our first question, what are the advantages of using pesticides in farming? There are many advantages of using pesticides. According to research, pesticides are an economical way of controlling pests like weeds, insect, fungi, or rodents. They require low labour input and allow large areas to be treated quickly and effectively. It has been estimated that there is a four-fold return on every dollar a farmer spends on pesticides. Pesticides are often used to stop the spread of pests on imports and exports, and protect against house and furniture destruction as well. Currently, weeds are controlled by herbicides, but without them, land will be damage, reducing land degradation. That brings me to the end of my part. Now, Saowalak Phimkhan will tell you about.
Thank you Suparat Noimor. To answer the second question, what are the disadvantages of using pesticides in farming? Despite their many advantages, there are disadvantage of pesticides. Pesticides have many advantages, there are disadvantage of pesticides. To start with, chemical application spread the reduction in these other organisms which can result in changes in the biodiversity of an area and affect natural biological balances. Pesticides can affect other areas during application and can cause severe problems in different crops, livestock, waterways and the general environment and cause environmental pollution. That’s the end of our talk to day. Before we start answering your question, let me briefly summarize what we have said here. In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages of using pesticides.
