The output of this data analysis demonstrated that both HFCT and PFCT
detect similar signatures, having a rise time of 500 nano
second. Based on the laboratory results and on-site
measurements, PFCT can be considered for detecting PD in cables.
This method of using a preinstalled PFCT (originally installed for protection or instrumentation purposes) to detect PD is not only a cost effective solution but also offers a non invasive method of detecting PD in cable cores irrespective of
switchgear design.
Further work includes collecting on-site data from various cable networks followed by comparative performance analysis of PFCT and HFCT in detecting PD
from cables.
The single ended method of PD detection can have difficulty in locating the PD source associated with the cable under measurement.
Research into the use of a double ended PD monitoring system using accurate time base alignment is in progress.
This approach is intended to improve the location accuracy and increase the probability of successfully detecting and locating the PD source.
