1. Present one item to the student. Explain the item's purpose and attempt to elicit a response from the student that notes understanding of the object's name.
2. Repeat Step 1, one item at a time, for all the remaining objects that will be taught.
3. Present two items from the training materials and ask the student to indicate which one is being requested. (Note. This is similar to the task in ADT 4.) Provide continuous reinforcement for correct responses. Use physical and/or gestural prompting as necessary.
4. Increase item numbers from two to three to four and then five, continuing with constant reinforcement for every correct response.
5. Fade reinforcement to a level of one per training session
