Preparing the child for diagnostic tests is an important nurseing intervention. Because fiberoptic endoscopy is often performed, the child must be prepared for conscious sedation. Keeping the child on NPO status for at least 6 hours, maintaining an IV line, and monitoring vital signs and respiratory function during the procedure are nursing responsibilities. Upper GI examinations and ultrasonography may also be performed.
