I believe public health in practice is about a collaborative, organized effort to improve health and facilitate informed decision-making on health risks. Currently I am part of a team involved in an emergency response plan to protect our staff and patient population from any potentially high-risk infections presenting at our center; a particular concern this year due to the Ebola outbreaks and the high numbers of immune-compromised patients we work with every day. With the aim of implementing appropriate safety measures to improve workplace health, safety and prevent injury, I also helped to conduct a department wide assessment where we identified multiple hazards and submitted them for improvement. My interests in education and informed decision-making led me to an opportunity recently to provide peer education by researching a specific treatment technique and our center's protocols, and delivering an in-service on my findings. My strong research and communication skills were essential to creating a concise, evidence-based presentation for my peers that contributed to their center's adoption of the technique.
