Dimensions for the coils along with a suitable radial flux density had been established. A primitive technique was employed to ensure a fair comparison of the three topologies. A python script executed static FEM solutions for radial flux density to ensure that the designs containing steel used the optimal yoke and magnet thicknesses. The script worked on the principle that increasing yoke thickness contributes to performance up to a “knee point” after which percentage of contribution per unit thickness added drops dramatically. Increments were made in tenths of a millimeter. The flow chart in Figure 8 summarizes the process.
