Tally does not go home to Jack and Maureen but instead finds other homes. Jack and Maureen is not worried because they know Tally knows how to survive. It is described that Tally likes people but never loved anybody making him free to move on and go anywhere he wants. At the time, there were a lot of construction workers from many places. Most of them didn’t have wives and were lonely so they loved having Tally around. No one knew Tally's name so they called him Red Dog, or Red because he was a Red Cloud Kelpie kind. It describes Red Dog's "lovely dark red, brown color, with golden yellow eyes", and cleverness. Many people know Red Dog because of a maori bus driver named John who loved animals more than anything. John met and greeted Red Dog with kindness and love and Red Dog knew his life was going to change from there. Red Dog rode the bus with John everywhere, this is why lots of people got to know Red Dog. One day Nancy Grey, who was new in town came on the bus and the seats were full so she tried to get Red Dog to move but Red Dog wouldn’t move. As days go by, they slowly became friends and Nancy was one of the few people Red Dog would let sit next to him on the bus.
