Founded in 1855 by King Maximilian II, the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum is one of Europe’s greatest museums of art and cultural history. Pieces once owned by the House of Wittelsbach form the heart of the collection. Built according to plans by Gabriel von Seidl in the Historicist style, the museum edifice – with its unique historical interiors – is one of the most original and significant museum architecture from the time around 1900.
Visitors are introduced to the different epochs of western art as they move through the museum - from late antiquity to Art Nouveau – reveal themselves to you. In addition to numerous masterpieces of sculpture and painting, the permanent exhibition also offer precious works in ivory and gold, tapestries, furniture, weapons and exquisite porcelain.
