Similarly, the third popular activity (10%), Tableau, required that students in small groups
create a “frozen picture” based on the book “Faithful Elephants.” Each individual then had to say
a few lines best representing the role s/he took on, such as a starved elephant or an agonized
zookeeper. Going beyond conventional grammar practices, this dramatic tableau activity makes
readers feel empathic toward the characters in the story, and connects reading with making
meaning. Students in this study completed the task spontaneously and seemed to have much fun.
