The process of designing a character starts with a character designer receiving script pages from the director. These script pages describe what the character is like. The artist then has to complete hundreds of drawing of what they believed the character would be like. An art review will then be undertaken where the director selects a number of these drawings and designs which best fit their vision when they were writing the script and developing the character for the film. The character designer then takes those drawing and begins developing them again back at the drawing board. This process repeats itself until the perfect character has been designed.
