Precipitation is the general removal method of phosphorus from
wastewater (Barat et al., 2011). Phosphorus can be incorporated in
either biological solids or chemical precipitation (Mañas et al.,
2011). However, an alternative method, called phytoremediation,
uses plants to remove contaminants from the environment. Phytoremediation
has the potential to remediate many chemical
compounds (Chang et al., 2012; Lu et al., 2008; Pulford and Watson,
2003; Yi et al., 2009; Zhanga et al., 2010). Domestic wastewater
contains required nutrients for plant growth. Phosphorus is known
as a major macronutrient for plant growth. Plant uptakes phosphorus
in the form of phosphate and is stored in the plant tissue
such as flowers and seeds (Xiao et al., 2009). The importance of
phosphorus for the plant leads to the possible use of the plant for
phosphorus removal from domestic wastewater. Moreover, other
nutrients such as nitrogen and organic matters that contaminated
in the wastewater will also be removed by the plant.
From our screening of 5 plants including Nelumbo nucifera
