Copacino (2003) reports on a study by Accenture, Stanford
University, and the Institute Europeen d’Administration des
Affaires on how companies use SCM to gain or sustain
competitive advantage. The study demonstrated explicit
correlations between supply chain performance and financial
success and concluded that companies can become “supply
chain masters,” by making SCM a key part of their business
strategy.
Otto and Kotzab (2003) examined SCM profitability.
Recognizing that SCM involves decision making in different
areas of an organization, they developed six sets of metrics to
measure the performance of the supply chain. The metrics
covered the areas of system dynamics, operations research/IT,
logistics, marketing, organization and strategy – reflecting the
main disciplines that contributed to the field of SCM. This
research suggests a link between SCM, marketing, strategy
and the so-called “bottom line,” but focused only on
developing metrics for the different areas rather than
examining the nature of their relationships.
Other research by Martin and Grbac (2003) asserts that
strong supplier relationships tend to affect a firm’s
performance, at least in part, because they help the firm
respond to customer needs in a timely manner. They suggest
that supplier relationships are a way of leveraging a firm’s
market orientation by improving customer responsiveness.
The authors found cross-functional sharing of information to
be the link that ties market orientation and supplier
relationships together.
In keeping with the notion that competition is increasingly
between supply chains rather than between firms, Vokurka
et al. (2002), expanded on the sand cone model developed by
Ferdows and De Meyer (1990), and the sand cone model
extension of Vokurka and Fliedner (1998) which incorporated
agility into SCM priorities, to provide a framework for a
cumulative and sustainable improvement process wherein
supply chains can build competitive advantage. Their model
considers the supply chain as an extended enterprise, and
suggested that all of the firms comprising a supply chain
should focus their sequential, cumulative efforts on quality,
dependability, flexibility, agility, and cost efficiency. They
advocate this approach to improve SC competitiveness in a
highly dynamic environment characterized by rapidlychanging
customer requirements. Their approach, in
essence, would result in all firms in the supply chain setting
priorities consistent with a marketing orientation. Marketing
orientation would thus be positively related to effective SCM.
A link between SCM and marketing orientation, marketing
success, organizational success and supply chain success is
thus implied.
Wisner (2003) used structural equation modeling in
developing and analyzing a theoretical framework for
supplier management and customer relationship strategies,
SCM strategy, and firm performance. His structural equation
model for SCM supported a bi-directional relationship
between supplier management and customer relationship
strategy. Both supplier management and customer
relationship strategy positively impacted SCM strategy, and
SCM strategy influenced firm performance. Relationships
among SCM, customer relationship management (consistent
with a marketing orientation), and firm performance are
supported by his model.
