load [9]. In this report, we made the small scale flywheel testing
device which has the same components as that of the concept.
Through the experiment and the analysis, it was found that SMB
was able to suspend contactless the rotor between the rigid and
elastic modes using contactless magnetic driver. Thus, the feasibility
of the SMB and our superconducting FESS concept was
demonstrated.
We are constructing a new testing device with larger SMBs
based on the same concept and the small test device. Table 2 shows
the specification of these SMBs. We designed that they have more
than 20-kN load capacity, which is needed to store regenerative
energy in the railway system. This device will be able to measure
its rotor displacement in greater detail.
