The second idea aims to improve the backfill soil without overall excavation so that liquefaction resistance of “existing” embedded pipelines might be improved more easily. For example, Figure 1 schematically shows a columnar structure embedded between the top of a pipeline and the base of surface pavement. This structure is supported by the rigid pavement and is able to efficiently prevent the floating of a pipe during the possible liquefaction of backfill. Note that the excavation that is needed for the installation of this column is significantly less than that of the overall excavation.
