This study compared the industrial safety sign comprehension performance of registered
and non-registered safety officers in Hong Kong. The findings provide some useful
information for safety management in the selection and evaluation of safety signs for
improving workplace safety and organizational culture. The results demonstrated that
the effectiveness with which safety sign messages are communicated relates to both the
user characteristics and cognitive sign features. The comprehensibility of safety signs
was better for the signs which were familiar, concrete, simple, and meaningful, which
suggest that safety management office should use familiar symbols as much as possible.
