Modifications for threshing pigeonpea: Generally 36 spikes are provided on threshing drum for threshing wheat. During preliminary studies it was found that percentage of broken grains was high. Presuming this may be because of impact, various options of reducing (threshing elements) spikes were tried. The option in which only six spikes were provided on the threshing cylinder in 6 rows i.e. 1 in each row suited best for threshing pigeonpea. The arrangement of spikes on cylinder periphery was helical. Similarly, concave clearance was increased from 15 to 25 mm by reducing length of spikes. Various modifications incorporated on a typical spike-tooth type wheat thresher for pigeonpea are indicated in Table 2. Also modified thresher is shown in Fig. 2.
