The consequences of adherence fall into three categories:
patient-related, healthcare professional-related and healthcare
system-related (Sabate´ 2003). Patient-related consequences
include improved morbidity and reduced mortality,
conflict resolution, attributional uncertainty, empowerment
and possible improvements in quality of life (Buchmann
1997, Wilson et al. 2002, Simpson et al. 2006). However, it
should be noted that some authors suggest that adherence
may lead to an increase in morbidity, mortality and quality of
life as a consequence of increased medication side effects
(Sabate´ 2003, Simpson et al. 2006). Healthcare professional
consequences include ambivalence towards a patient’s adherence
behaviour, misinterpretation, disempowerment, acceptance
or avoidance of the adherence behaviour (Buchmann
1997, Working Party 1997, Sabate´ 2003, Christensen 2004,
