In addition to allowing the passage of an ever-growing
number of “post-Panamax” ships with an estimated
cut-off point of around 13,500 TEUs, the expansion
aims to reduce delays and costs. The Panama Canal
Authority estimates the cost savings that will accrue to
shippers from economies of scale to range between
7 per cent and 17 per cent (Mid-America Freight
Coalition, 2011).
