The breed effect estimates found in this study for the
post-weaning growth traits are in agreement with previous
estimates (ten Napel and Johnson, 1997) and suggest that
Landrace animals grow faster but are not as lean as Large
White animals.
For the population used in this study, there
is evidence to suggest that Landrace sows tend to have
more pigs born alive than Large White sows, which is in disagreement
with Chen et al. (2003).
This disagreement could
be due to the different populations used in the two studies.
