To carve the blocks of ice, swing saws are used and the blocks of ice are taken from frozen surface of Songhua River. Different types of saws are used to carve specific ice sculptures. Not only intricate designed are made, but the skilled sculptors spend days and nights before the start of this festival to deliver unique and amazing atmosphere in the city. Often used is the deionised water that keeps the blocks crystal clear rather than translucent. The views become more appealing due to the decoration of multicolored lights that give colors to ice, especially at night. The 29th Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival was held on the same date – January 5, 2013 and lasted for one month.
